The numbering format
Each line gets its number, a full stop and a space: "1. text". Numbers are right-aligned, so in a list of 10 or more lines the text column still lines up (" 9." above "10."). Blank lines are numbered too, and so is a final empty line if your text ends with a line break — delete that last break if you don't want an extra number at the end.
