How much fits

Codes are made with error-correction level M, which still scans with about 15% of the code damaged or covered. At that level one QR code holds at most 2,331 characters of ordinary text, 3,391 if it's only capitals and digits, or 5,596 digits. Accented letters take two bytes each and most emoji four, so the limit drops to about 1,165 letters with diacritics. Shorter content makes a simpler code that scans faster: a 20-character link fits in a 25×25 grid. The download is a 512×512 PNG with a white border.

Static codes don't expire

The text or link is stored inside the code itself — nothing passes through our servers, there's no tracking and the code works forever. The flip side is that a printed code can't be changed. If the destination might move, point the code to a page on your own site that you can update or redirect.

Frequently asked questions

What can I put in a QR code?

Any text or link — a website URL is the most common, but plain text works too.

What format is the download?

A PNG image you can print or place anywhere.

Is my data uploaded?

No — the QR code is generated in your browser.

Can I make a Wi-Fi QR code?

Yes — enter WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:Password;; with your network's name and password. Phone cameras offer to join the network when they scan it. The password is stored in the code as plain text, so only display it where you'd show the password itself.

Your text is processed entirely in your browser and never uploaded — read more on the security page. Looking for more? Browse our full set of text tools or read guides on the blog.
